I started out training this by having her pick up a toy and target my hand and then slowly moved my hand over a basket but it wasn't working very well.
We stopped working on this trick for a long time. I had other stuff I wanted to train and it just wasn't important. Recently I started working on it again and I changed up the way I decided to train it. I started with an empty food bowl and shaping nose touches to the center of the bowl. Once she got that down I added a ball and shaped her for picking up the ball and getting closer and closer to the bowl and then the final step was putting the ball into the bowl.
Once she got the idea that she could put the ball into the bowl we moved on to other objects and then finally I put the bowl in the box and she generalized it right away. The next step is to fade the bowl all together and just have the box there. I will keep everyone updated on how it goes.
Wow - nice work both of you! I would love to teach Ruby this but had no idea how to get started. I like the bowl idea a lot. It's so cute how Zoe takes her time choosing each toy.
ReplyDeleteThank you!! It's not too hard once they get the idea of putting it in the box, the hard part is getting them to leave the stuff that's already in the box for another toy that's on the ground. :D
DeleteImpressive! I'm always in awe of people who can do things like this!
ReplyDeleteThank you! She's a really good girl. :-D
DeleteI really admire how well trained she is. Good job!
