Zoe's having some contact allergies from the wet grass now that we are back in Oregon. It's not fun. So I put her in booties and we went to a new park. She was not very happy. :(
Has anyone else ever dealt with this before? Have you found anything that worked? Her feet are red with some pus. No yeast. They don't smell either but they are bothering her. We've been to the vet a ton for this and we do have a prescribed spray we've been using. She's also on benedryl. Any suggestions are welcome!

Poor Zoe. Does the vet think she's allergic to the grass or something in the environment? Is she like that pretty much all rainy season?
ReplyDeleteWe are assuming it's the mucky grass. She only has this happen after it's been raining for days on end and you go outside and step in the grass and sink 3" and it's just mud. Sometimes it's all four paws, sometimes it's a paw or two. Right now it's just one paw, thankfully.
DeleteIt kind of makes me prefer those days when it's below 30 and the ground is frozen solid!!
We had a golden that had an allergy to a specific weed here in AZ - and only when it dried out. We ended up washing her feet a couple of times a day - we kept a wash cloth near the door in a coffee can just for that - and carefully drying them out. It was better, but still not perfect.

That is so sad! We always feel so bad for dogs with allergies, but on the paws is such a bummer. Hope you can get it cleared up and find a solution.
ReplyDeleteI have not tried it, but I have heard giving the dog local honey can help with skin allergies. Also, rinsing after being out and maybe even a shampoo. Had a pal that had a lab with skin allergies and every time the dog had to swim at a test, she would get out bottles of water and shampoo and do it right there on the spot. Those boots are high, I would imagine they take getting used to.
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting! I will have to look into it! I do wash her feet but I can't always. When I know I won't have time, I make her wear the booties, especially if she's already flared up. I thought we were doing okay because the ground had been frozen for a while but then it started raining and she went out once without boots and one paw is so icky. The rest look okay, though!
DeleteI've heard about the honey thing for people--apparently since the bees go around pollenating all of the local plants, their honey contains stuff that helps humans build up tolerance to them, so I would think it might work for dogs, too? I sometimes add a squirt of honey to Barley's Kong or to homemade treat recipes just for something fun--she doesn't have allergies, but she certainly likes the honey, so it might be worth a shot?

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear this. I wish I had knowledge of something that would give her some relief - but I don't. Hugs and tail wags from Harley and I instead. I hope she feels better soon.
ReplyDeletewe went thru this with our lab. We ended up after many vet visits, washing her feet with tar shampoo, antibiotics, steroids, by going to a vet dermatologist. He tested, provided serum I injected weekly. Cleared up, and we wished we had done it earlier.
ReplyDeleteThe poodle has severe food allergies, so his skin issues cleared up when we went to the non allergenic diet. Cleared right up with no meds, it was food! Imagine.

Poor Zoe. The boots look like a good idea to stop her from coming in contact with the grass. I hope she feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteI think those boots are a great solution - even though it doesn't look like she's enjoying them very much. I use Musher's Secret for Blueberry - but if she had pus and redness I'd probably have to make both of us suck it up and use boots. The couple of times Blueberry has had cracks and a little blood - I've put her on house arrest (except for the backyard of course) and used Musher's Secret until she's had a few days to heal up.

You are pretty much doing what we do, Benadryl and using a calming spray on the feet. The booties are a great idea too, or you could just wipe the feet off after being outdoors. There is also a drug called Apoquel you could ask your vet about. Good luck. Love Dolly

ReplyDeleteCanine allergies are the worst! And dogs so hate those booties. Wilson gets allergies in late July/early August. Fortunately he doesn't chew it raw, just a bit of licking, but I can tell by his discolored fur. Benedryl has helped so far.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it totally sucks. :( She hates the booties and I'm concerned because I definitely noticed a gait change! The last thing I need is a "sports" injury as well. :(

ReplyDeleteK9 Kelp's Shampoo and Conditioner spray had worked wonders for Bain's itchy rashes. It's also a natural bug repellent which is a bonus.

DeleteI am so sorry... We don't have experience with contact allergies. R does have serious pollen allergies, and wiping him down with a damp towel every time he comes in from outdoors helps a lot. But I imagine that you are already washing her feet after each outing... Boots sure seem like a good solution to me if you can find some that she likes.
ReplyDeleteI have had success in using K9 Kelp products too...in lessening the itchiness. I also use either Pet Naturals Oil or Coconut Oil in Chloe's food. I also have tried Vetericyn, which is a spray on. My husband found that spray at our local Farm and Garden Store. It's a little pricey, but it does help a LOT! Poor little one...allergies are not fun.

ReplyDeleteIf you come up with a great solution would you mind posting about it? I have a friend who has a boxer with the same problem, the solution? Stay out of the grass! LoL...right....so they are constantly battling her feet breakouts.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I've found to be helpful is to have her wear the boots when it's wet out, she hates them and acts gimpy in them. When I worked at the vet I would occasionally have them do a shot of cortisone. I also have a vet prescribed spray that I use. It helps a little. I also wash her feet daily with antibacterial scent free soap.
