Wisdom Panel 3.0

This post is sponsored by Mars Veterinary "Wisdom Panel 3.0" and I am being compensated to spread the word about Wisdom Panel. ZoePhee only shares information that is relevant to our readers.

Have you ever wondered what breed of dog your pup is? I know I have. We've thought about it a lot and have definitely considered getting dna testing done. We've heard everything from chihuahua to basenji and everything in between! Not knowing what they are can sometimes be a little scary because you never know what sort of genetic issues may come up. Knowing specific breed information can be a huge help when it comes to the proper nutrition, training and overall healthcare of your pet. Plus, understanding the breeds that make up your furry family member enables targeted care and in some cases provides lifesaving information.

Knowing your dog’s genetics can let you know what health issues to lookout for. It can even help you develop an appropriate diet and exercise plan for your dog so he or she can live their happiest and healthiest life.

Mars Veterinary, the industry leader in canine genetic testing, just released their next evolution of the canine DNA test—Wisdom Panel® 3.0— which not only expands the breed screening coverage, but the medical applications as well with the new MDR1 Genetic Mutation screening.

Why is the MDR1 screening important? Dogs with the MDR1-mutation may have severe adverse reactions to some common drugs, so it is important to test mixed-breed (and purebreds with the high-propensity breeds) dogs and for owners to share results with their veterinarian so they can provide the dog with the best possible care. For more information on breeds and drugs affected by the MDR1 mutation, visit Wisdom Panel's MDRI screening page.

The canine DNA test is so simple to use it can even be performed at home. Swab your dog's gum line for 15 seconds then send your test in to the lab for quick results. You'll get the results a few weeks later. To make things even easier for you, the cost of shipping in your swab is included in the price of the kit. Kits can be purchased 24/7 at Wisdom Panel's site.

When you send in your swab, your dog's DNA information is checked against a growing database of DNA information (over 10,000 samples). The Wisdom Panel test now covers over 250 breeds (including mixes), in addition to some medical screenings.

  1. Wow, that's awesome! That's cheaper than my vet will do an MDR1 test. I've been skeptical about DNA breed tests, and since my dogs are purebreds, it's not really applicable to me personally. But if their MDR1 screening is accurate, that would definitely benefit me since both of my breeds are affected.

  2. We know where our genes come from but we have furends who could benefit from a DNA test!

  3. This is a great benefit to adopted pups that need to know if they are prone to certain diseases. Great information.

  4. I wonder how accurate their DNA testing for mixes is? I have seen a few results that I do not think were all that helpful because the ancestor's breed could not be identified.

    1. Yeah, I was on the fence about them before as well because of some odd results that friends have gotten but I've been told the tests are more accurate now than before.

  5. I've seen some wisdom panel results that are just ridiculous, but it's still cool to see!

  6. I think that this is a cool development in the dog world. I bet it will get better and better with time!! I bought my friend one for her birthday, and she got some crazy results for her Lab mix - but maybe they're true!

  7. We did this for one of our dogs and the results were fascinating! She turned out to be such a mix that it wasn't really all that helpful in terms of her health, but it was crazy fun to do.

  8. I have been thinking about doing a DNA test on Phoebe, we don't know for sure what breed mix she is; people have all different kinds of opinions on what her breed might be.

  9. Thanks so much for sharing! I know we are going to be ordering mine soon. As a Dachshund mix there are a lot of health issues to be concerned about so it'd be nice to learn as much information as possible. Love Dolly
