Car Rides on Wordless Wednesday

Zoe going for a car ride in our Toyota Matrix!!

Right before we moved to California from Oregon, my car blew up.. Like it literally just stopped working on the busiest, scariest freeway in Portland. I had a Honda Civic Hybrid. The transmission and both batteries went out all at the same time. When the car died, we had no power of steering, no windows or anything.. It was extremely scary! We also had both dogs in the backseat at the time and we were on our way home from Doggie Dash. Luckily, my husband was driving and he was able to get us safely off the freeway and my friend was able to come get us. So we had to get rid of my car and when we came to California, my husband's truck would not smog either. So we were basically out two vehicles.

We ended up buying a Toyota Matrix and it's okay but Zoe absolutely hates riding in it. She really does. It is so weird because she went everywhere with me in my Honda and she's never been bothered by rides before. She actually gets pretty upset when we tell her she's going for a car ride and she doesn't want to get in. I'm not sure what caused it but I am working on counter conditioning her and trying to fix it.

"I hate this car!!!"

We have had a break through with Phoenix's car sickness, though!! We've found that if we keep her window rolled about half way down, she doesn't vomit. Or if I ride in the backseat with her she usually doesn't vomit. There was one exception to that and it was because she was too warm, but luckily she didn't puke on me!

Phoenix still looks pretty miserable, though most of the time!

"Are we there yet? I feel kinda woozy..."

This is the only shot I've ever gotten of Phoenix not looking sick in the car!

Poor puppies!! They are always very happy to get to where we are going though!

Does your dog like car rides?

Also, I wanted to send a shout out and a BIG Thank You to Jenna from Love is Being Owned by a Husky She sent me a beautiful "Gotcha Day" Birthday Card/Graphic for Phoenix's Gotcha Day. It's absolutely gorgeous and we love it! Thanks so much!!

  1. Aww... we thought all dogs love car rides! Looks like the scary ride in the previous car must have freaked her out. Hope she gets over it soon.

  2. We love car rides. Katie and I started our riding careers on the German Autobahn at 9 weeks old. Bailie was on a long ride to get to us last year, so we are all great in the car and love to go along.

  3. I love car rides! But I, too, get sick in the car, and ours is a Honda Accord. We found that when I ride free in the backseat, that I won't stop moving around, pace, drool, the whole 9 yards. The Humans took a plastic dog crate and just took the top half off, creating a little "bucket" for me to sit in. It somehow works for her, at least it keeps me from puking! The drooling, however, is still a work in progress. ;-)

  6. My guys are great in the car and love going places. Luckily, I've never had a dog that gets carsick.Have you tried Dramamine or Bonine for Phoenix? If not, ask your vet first and see if they think it is worth a try as well as proper dosage. I've had people tell me it helped a lot.

    1. That's awesome! Zoe used to be, I don't know what happened. Anyways, yep! I've tried all kinds of things with Phoenix. I used to work at a vet clinic and the only we've found that helps is cerenia but it's too expensive for every day car rides. I've gotten it for longer trips, though!

  7. Mr. N likes car rides because he knows that he's going somewhere. We had a foster dog who loved car rides because it meant new sights and new smells without him having to do any of the work!

  9. Love car rides! But we have a Civic too and they ride real smooth so maybe that's something. I get car sick just looking at the car, an empty stomach is most important to us if you haven't tried that. Love Dolly

  12. Oh, poor sweetie! Rita loves to ride along in the car - but she makes me nuts sometimes barking at dogs we pass out for walks. (Oy.) Anyway, she loves it and tries to jump in with me every time we go. The only thing she doesn't like is LONG road trips. She starts to get freaked out by the road/other traffic noises after a certain point.

Love the gotcha day card! Happy gotcha day!!

  13. Veruca isn't a fan of car rides either. I have a little two door car and she usually sits on the back seat and has her head on the back of my seat as close to the window as possible. Ava on the other had loves the car and would stay in it all day if she could. Great card!

  14. Poor girls! Have they been going on less car rides since you moved? Maybe that's Zoe's issue. Pike gets car sick, too. :( Always has. I remember brining him home and having him vomit all over me...three different times. Nola's great in the car.

    1. Yeah, they have and I think that could be part of the problem! It's really sad.

  15. Those poor girls. I bet that Zoe will get over it with your expert training, and I sure hope that Phoenix does too. We had a dog who got carsick consistently but it was because we had her in a crate that was faced backwards. As soon as she started sitting in the back seat, she got much better.

Shyla doesn't love car-rides but she tolerates them. It took a lot time to even get her into the car - she was afraid of it when we adopted her so we spent lots of time with her just getting in and out of the car for treats but not going anywhere.

    1. I hope so!

That's awesome that you took the time to get Shyla used to the car!

  16. Poor girls. It took me a year and a half to get Faolan comfortable with car rides. Now he (and Neeko and Bruce) loves them!
