Car Sick but Happy!

Hurtta Active Harness, review is forthcoming!

As you might be able to tell in the photo, with Phoenix's slightly glazed over look, she is car sick! Poor thing! She has always had trouble riding in the car and it was just one of those days! She was really happy to be hiking and she would never want to be left behind so it's just one of those things we have to deal with sometimes! I'm glad it doesn't happen as much as it used to!

Have you ever dealt with car sickness in your dog before? Have you tried anything that has helped?

  1. Poor thing! Bruin used to get car sick when he was a puppy but it eventually went away.

  2. That is a major bummer. None of us have ever had issues riding in the car thankfully. Hope she feels better soon.

  3. Rodrigo used to get car sick, but I was able to help him get passed it and I feel so fortunate, because he loves car rides. If I open my car door wide enough, he jumps in and it's hard to get him out. If none of the other dogs are around, I'll just get in with him and we'll go somewhere.

  4. Hi Lauren,

You can try Benedryl (or the generic which is Diphenhydramine) for Phoenix's car sickness. The dosage is one mg (milligram) per pound or basically equal to your dog's weight in pounds. The tablets usually come in a 25 mg size so if Phoenix weighs 25 pounds, she would get one tablet. I would recommend giving it to her one hour before her car ride.

If Benedryl doesn't work for Phoenix, you can see your veterinarian about a prescription medication such as Cerenia (maropitant).

    I hope this helps.

  5. I don't like riding in the car with Mom as the first time I did so, after the great rescue from the high kill shelter, I got sick. I found that if I DON'T look at the window and just lay down, I dont' get sick.

    Enjoy your outings!

  9. Pike has truly horrible carsickness. Always had, even at 12 weeks old. I've tried crating him, having him in a harness, having him see out the window, having him not see out the window, cranking the air up and freezing us all, not feeding him before, OTC medications, even a Thundershirt. Nothing has helped. :(

  10. My trainer's puppy had carsickness when she got her. I think she used bonine in conjunction with a DS/CC program, and her puppy got over it, thankfully.

I've wondered if Nala gets carsick, since she can get agitated on car rides. But, honestly, I think she's just being an impatient little dork who can't wait to get to the fun that awaits her at the end and hates the slippery seat cover.

  11. You know...I think Ziva may get a bit car sick too. She hates the front seat and will lean as far back into it as possible, wide eyes and panting the whole time.
She seems to be most comfy in the far back of my car where she can lay down.
Dante on the other hand loves the front seat!
