Let's Go Hiking with the Hurtta Active Harness!

Let's go hiking! There's nothing more refreshing than a peaceful hike in the forest with my dogs. Getting away from the noise in the city and being out in the fresh mountain air is so hugely beneficial to our lives. My dogs absolutely love any and all adventures in the wilderness so I was super excited when Hurtta asked us to test out and review their new Active Harness.

The brand new Active Harness from Hurtta is an awesome, versatile harness. The harness is padded for comfort and is easily adjustable. The Active Harness is one of the first from the Hurtta line that features 4 points of adjustment. This harness has two heavy duty clips on each side so you don't have to bend your dogs legs or touch their feet to get the harness on. The back of the harness comes with a sturdy handle. The handle is really helpful for keeping your dog close to you on more narrow trails and it's also useful if you need to help lift your dog up. You can also use this handle to feed a seat belt through in the car (as a car safety harness) but we have not tried this feature yet.

The Active Harness features efficient 3m reflectors and I really love the bright pink. The dogs are very visible, which is so important when you're hiking in the mountains, especially during hunting season. The Harness comes in Cherry (hot pink), Raven (black), Yellow or Orange. We chose the cherry color because I really like my dogs in girly colors.

I really like the Active Harness. It's a great, light-weight but sturdy piece of equipment that's really nicely padded and didn't cause any rubbing or chaffing on my dogs. The only thing I would change about the Active Harness is that I feel like the chest piece is too wide for my dogs and I would make it more narrow between the front legs. The girls didn't have any trouble with it rubbing but we also don't do long distance treks. We hike more for pleasure than anything else and we only go 4-8 miles each trip out. I also think it would be great if Hurtta offered more colors.

If you need a new sturdy harness for you dog I would recommend checking the Active Harness out!

You can find retailers in North America by going here: Hurtta247 Stockists.

I would also highly recommend checking Hurtta out on Facebook and liking their page. They often look for product testers and run their own giveaways. The best way of finding out all the Hurtta news is by liking their page.

ZoePhee received two Active Harnesses from Hurtta in exchange for an honest review. We were not monetarily compensated and all opinions are my own. Hurtta is not responsible for the content of this blog post.

  1. It looks really nice, but is it warm? We are always too warm in nice weather and it looks like it might be too warm.

    1. We went hiking when it was 85 degrees and all of us were too warm but the girls didn't seem any hotter than usual. It's pretty light weight neoprene.

  2. Honey definitely needs a new harness so I read every review I see.

But I'm very fond of a front fastening harness. We don't always need the extra control. But when we do, I hate the notion of giving Honey 150 pounds of pulling power with a harness that attaches to the leash on the back.

I know your girls are smaller. But do they ever pull against the leash when it's attached to the back of the harness? And has this caused you any problems?

    1. I can definitely understand your concerns with front clipping harnesses but I have never had a problem with them and Zoe started out in one almost 5 years ago. Yep, my dogs can and will pull in a back clipping harness, even with all the training I've done. If they see a squirrel they forget their training. There have been harnesses that I've definitely noticed they pull in more. For example the Original Hurtta harness that has a strap that goes across the chest, Zoe will pull into that one. The Y Hurrta harness has a strap that goes through the front legs instead of across the chest and they don't pull as much when wearing that one. They also didn't pull at all in the Active Harness.

If you are interested in a no-pull harness, I would recommend either the Freedom Harness or Wonder Walker. I do not recommend the easy walk harness from premier.

  3. How fun and I love that harness. Little Bit had one much like it. We also had a seat belt for her. She was a very big dog and we wanted to make sure she was safe in our travels.

Have a woof woof day you two. My best to your wonderful mom. ☺

  6. The girls look very cute in their pink harnesses! Barley HATES harnesses--she runs and hides when I get one out--so I only make her wear one when she needs to be buckled in the car. She would refuse to hike if I tried to make her wear one on an adventure (I also never trust the fit because she's so oddly shaped and can get out of every single harness we've ever tried, so I wouldn't be comfortable walking her with a harness, either!). It looks like your girls think this one is pretty awesome, though :)

  16. Great review - we've tried out their hiking belt and loved it. It looks like a great option for our dog Shermie. IS there a front clip option? This may be a good option for nosework.

    1. Thank you! So far I have not seen anything from Hurtta that has a front clip! I've actually been using their Y harness for our training classes and I'm pretty happy with it as well!

  17. Interesting harness! Your girls look smashing and it is so GREEN there! Did you try lifting them with the handle? Everything is so far forward on the harness, I'm wondering if it's very workable to use it to provide an assist versus holding the dog in place, etc.

    1. Thanks! I just tried lifting Phoenix and you're right. It is a little far forward but all I needed to do was put a hand under her tuck up area as well and it worked okay! We haven't had to lift them up any trails yet.

  18. Your girls are so cute in their pink harnesses! I'm always on the look out for good quality harnesses. On a side note, I'm totally jealous of your scenery!

    1. Awe thanks! Yeah, the scenery here was one of the reasons why I wanted to move to Oregon. We're originally from California. :D

Hurtta is one of my favorite brands, their stuff is all high quality! :D

  22. Kilo Pug uses harnesses. They need to be light and sturdy. He has a wide chest but is a ninja at escaping and pulls. Love the pink!. Shame they don't have a nice blue but he would look good in the others.

  24. Gorgeous harnesses and love your review, too! I like the idea of having the handles on top of the harnesses---what a great extra benefit. The pink is perfect!

  25. We have been looking for a harness with extra padding for Seager. His is just about worn completely out and there is absolutely no padding. Going to check into this for him!

    1. If you decide you don't like this one, check out the padded Y harness. We have that one, too and I love it! Here's my review on that one: http://zoephee.blogspot.com/2015/11/pamper-your-pup-with-padded-harness.html

  26. Gorgeous harness, I love that hot pink! That's the color I'd close too. I like that it's adjustable in several places, that's often an issue with other harnesses. Thanks for a great review!

  27. These harnesses look great! I love that they double as a harness for the car. That is a terrific feature. :) Now I wish my cats were more interested in taking walks!

  28. I really like the new Active harness! It's too hot in South Florida for a lot of outdoor activities but WHEN I move further north, a Hurtta is on my "Must Buy" list!

  29. My mom uses a back clipping harness on her dog all the time because he's a puller.

  30. Aw, I don't think this comes in itty-bitty Matilda size. She's doing great loose-leash walking, so I feel she deserves something comfortable. We finally found a soft, padded harness that fits her, but it looks like a toy, with a plastic clasp. :/ These Hurtta harnesses look so cute on your girls!

    1. That's awesome that Matilda is doing so well with her loose leash walking! I'm pretty sure they make the Y harness in her size. My friend has chihuahuas and she has them for her dogs. I would check the Y out, we have them and they are awesome, too!

  31. may need to get one of these harnesses for the pooches when we go on long adventures
