I will NOT get wet!!

Phoenix generally does not like going into the water. If she can't see the bottom she definitely won't go. Luckily this river is very clear!

Phoenix will wait on the bank for her sister, and then when Zoe comes back Phoenix gets super excited and pounces on her!

"You were playing in the water without me!!"

Eventually, if Phoenix gets hot enough and she can see the bottom she will go in. It takes her a while, though!

"It's wet... I'm not sure I like this!!"

....and she wouldn't want her sister to have the tasty stick all to herself.. so she has to go in!

"Zoe, you can't have the stick! It's mine!!"

 "I'm getting out!!"

She will also try to get out of the water as quickly as possible! It's really funny. She is not a water dog! :D

The photos were taken at the Silver Fork of the American River, in case anyone was curious! It's one of our favorite hiking spots!

  2. That's kind of what Jack is like although he'll wade around a bit more...and he is a water dog, or at least he's supposed to me!

    1. Isn't it funny when water dogs don't like water? :D I always thought so. Zoe will wade in but she won't swim at all. Phoenix would prefer to not touch it.

    1. Thank you!! I wish I could get them in the water more! The most I can get is Zoe will go out for a stick, but if it's too far she won't swim. She prefers "kerplunking". :D

  6. Such an ideal place to take a dog for a swim. I would love to find a place like that near us. Harley would have wonderful afternoons there.

  7. What a pretty spot! Neither Boca or Ruby are big fans of water. My previous dog Lasya used to love wading in the creek and chasing skipped stones.

    1. Thanks! :D When I first got Zoe she didn't like it, either.. She was just like Phoenix.. "Oh no.. a puddle.. must not get paws wet". She's so much better about it now but she still won't swim.

  10. Haha! Elli will wade up to her belly on her own, but I spent a good amount of time shaping her to swim using her favorite ball as a reward (on dry land fetch). She is still not one to go jumping in a river, but if her ball is out there, she'll go get it. :)

Water avoidance seems to be a thing when dogs don't have that insulating fur or blubber. Elli is basically naked out there, haha.

    1. I'm scared to try to get them to go for a toy in the water. I'm pretty sure I'd lose the toy! Haha! I usually just throw a stick for them. If I lose a stick, no biggie! They are not very toy crazy enough to go get it if it gets too far. I think you're right about the insulating fur and blubber, both girls are sight hound in body type! :D

  11. I think she is extremely smart that she will only go in if she can see the bottom. Potential danger can be avoided that way! Barks and licks and love, Dakota www.dakotasden.net

    1. That's really cool that Mika loves water! Most of my experiences with huskies have been them hating water and complaining very loudly about it! :D

  13. Mr. N doesn't really like water but he will wade. Of course wading for him means very shallow water.

  17. That river is gorgeous! Nola likes the water, if it's not cold, but Pike thinks it's his own personal hell.

    1. :D Thanks! Zoe is the same as Nola, if it's not freezing she's okay with it. Phoenix agrees with Pike. Haha!

  18. We had a yellow Lab who did not like water either. Very odd for a Lab! It sure looks like you have a gorgeous place for your pups to swim (or not), as they wish!

    1. That IS odd for a lab!! :D The river is a bit of a drive for us and sometimes it can be challenging to get out there because Phoenix gets really car sick but we try to go whenever we can! :D Thank you for stopping by! I think your photos are stunning!
