Our Exciting Encounter with Wild California Sea Lions!

Directly behind Phoenix there are dozens of seal lions! I know it's hard to tell in this photo but they look like little black dots poking their heads out of the water!

If you remember my trip from last Friday's post we went on an adventure to a new park. Well we found out about the seals when we stopped at a different park to stretch our legs. I got the girls out of the car and suddenly heard seal lions barking! It was the coolest thing ever and I was so excited! I was pretty much like a giddy school girl, dashing off towards the river to see if I could find them!

It was pretty interesting how both of my dogs reacted to hearing the seals. When we visited the seal lions in San Francisco, both dogs were super freaked out and they did not like it and didn't want anything to do with it. This time they were much more relaxed and interested in them!

We did keep a safe distance and we were not in any danger.

The seal lions seemed to be congregating under the bridge in the Cowlitz River so we jumped back in the car and drove over to the bridge and found a spot to park.

Here's a very short video of the seal lions barking.

There were so many!

We also spotted a Great Blue Heron!

Our day was completely filled with wildlife and it was so much fun! The girls had a blast exploring and I was over the moon excited that I got to photograph some wild seal lions! It was an amazing little trip!

Have you ever had a random encounter with wildlife before?

  1. That is really cool. We see a lot of wildlife where we live, but my fav is the time we saw the coyote.

  2. We saw seals on the North Sea, and when Katie was young, she and Mom found a baby seal that had been stranded on the beach and was crying like crazy. They had to call the seal center to have someone come out and take it to the place where they raise the babies and let them go at maturity. It was pretty cool I guess. Looks like a fun time.

  3. Oh how cool!!!!! I loved hearing them bark in the video. And would have been just as excited about seeing them.

  4. How fun indeed. We have a seal that fishes behind our boat. Every now and then it will catch one and everyone will watch the seal eat their lunch. Grand fun indeed.

Have a terrific day. Tons of scritches to the girls. ☺

  5. I always love checking out the sea lions in Newport. They like to sun themselves on the rocks there, and there are some sea lion docks made specifically for them to lay on right on the Bayfront. The first time Pallo heard them he was pretty freaked out, but both dogs think sea lions are pretty boring now.

  6. OMG how cool is that? I just LOVE seals and can't imagine how it would be to see them in the wild! So cool! DakotasDen

  7. Wow, that would be so cool! I would want to swim with the seals but mom said she would not allow it.

    Keep Calm & Bark On!

    Murphy & Stanley

  8. Oh, how coooooool! Seals make such funny noises...I've wondered what dogs would make of them!

  9. What cool things to see! Momma says she got bumped by a sea lion one time when she was bodysurfin at Santa Monica.

  10. I didn't know that seals went in rivers! What an incredibly cool day you had!!!! I'm glad the girls weren't scared - those are some odd noises that seals make ;)

And I think you know my answer to your question :)

  11. There's a beach were I take our dogs (or used to, we haven't been in a couple years) that has sea lions. I like to go early, before others arrive but if I'm too early, the sea lions are on the beach and they're dangerous. Our dogs are curious so I don't let the off leash, we just watch for them and if they're on the beach, we go home. It's cool to see.

  12. Amazing! What an experience to meet so many sea lions! I love when different animals interact to each other! So cute! <3
